Dogo Onsen Honkan

The main building of Dogo Onsen is an atmospheric three-story wooden structure. It was expanded over the years, resulting in a mix of architectural styles from 1894 to 1935. The building is a National Important Cultural Property. The building is a symbol of Matsuyama and appears in famous novels and movies including “Botchan” by celebrated author Natsume Soseki (1867–1916). The main building has two public baths, Kami no Yu and Tama no Yu, as well as an exclusive bath for the imperial family. The luxurious Tama no Yu bathing area has baths made of high-quality granite and marble-clad walls. After relaxing in the hot spring water, bathers can rent a yukata (light cotton kimono) and stroll the surrounding historical streets.

The elegant Yushinden bathing facility was built in 1899 for the exclusive use of the imperial family. The bath and surrounding rooms are in the opulent Momoyama-period style (1573–1615). Craftsmen used the finest materials such as cedar wood and granite to construct the Yushinden. The rooms are adorned with gold leaf, hand-painted sliding doors, and intricate carvings. The Yushinden can be toured for a fee.
