Miyajima hosts an oyster festival held at the square in front of the Miyajima pier on the second Saturday and Sunday in February, during the best season for oysters. Visitors can enjoy various kinds of oyster cuisine including steamed oysters, clay pot oysters, oysters with rice (zousui), fried oysters, okonomiyaki, and oyster and egg soup, all with reasonable prices. An oyster direct sales corner at this event is so popular that oysters sell out early every year due to their low price and freshness.
