Kangen-sai Festival

Kangen-sai Festival, which is representative of Shinto rituals in the Setouchi region, starts the evening of June 17th on the lunar year every year. A boat is floated upon which deities from the Miyajima Itsukushima Shrine are said to ride. On the same boat, musicians perform orchestral drums, flutes and the biwa (a lute-like Japanese instrument). The boat goes to Itsukushima Shrine, then returns back to Miyajima in the middle of the night. The illuminated boat in the dark sea looks very whimsical. During the festival, a lot of foodstalls are lined up along Jizomae shrine in Miyajima and this makes the place popular with many visitors.
