Ebisugahana Shipyard is the ruin of a shipyard which was originally built by the Hagi Domain. The shipyard was built in the Western style for wooden sailing ships at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. At that time, only large breakwaters were in place to protect the harbored ships. After extensive excavation investigation, it was discovered that shipbuilding technology from Russia and the Netherlands was used in building each of the two shipwrecked vessels located at this site. It is only here, at Ebisugahana Shipyard, that overseas shipbuilding technology was utilized along side Japanese shipbuilding technology. This site was designated a World Heritage Site as an industrial heritage of Japan during the Meiji Period.
