This historic site, which is located outside the outer moat of Old Hagi Castle, was designed following a grid pattern. Machiya (townhouse), and Buke-Yashiki (samurai houses) of middle and lower class families line the streets which even remains today. There are small streets called "Kikuya Yokocho," "Iseya Yokocho," and "Edoya Yokocho, " which feature the old residences of Kido Takayoshi, and a rich merchant family by the name of Kikuya. Visitors can stop by the souvenir shops which sell local Hagi products, as well as the numerous private cafes. This town was designated as a World Heritage Site in 2015.
